Some Iberian and Roman remains have been found in the village. This makes us think that the township was inhabited in those ages. As some historians affirm, the old name of Bonastre would be "Alastro", that comes from the Latin word "Oleastre". This means "terra de l'oli" (that is, the oils land). The historian Pere Català i Roca, this name was indeed mentioned in a document where the Castle of Castellví de La Marca was sold in 1011 and 1023. After this, it appeared again in the deed that represented the sale of the Castle of Tamarit, in 1049. Ten years later, the Counts of Barcelona gave the Puig D'Ullastrell to Bernat Amat and his wife, under the condition that they would build a castle in there. In 1066 the name of Ullastrell appeared in a document in which the lands of Puigperdigueres or Montornés were donated. In 1178 Bernat de Papiol donated the place to the Monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallés. The Monastery owned it until 1382, when the King Pere el Cerimoniós incorporated Bonastre to his crown. This was done after the Abbot of Sant Cugat surrendered his jurisdiction. Despite of this, we find that Bonastre was still dependent of the Monastery of Sant Cugat in the 17th.century. During the "Guerra dels Segadors", the village was converted into a refugee of inhabitants of the near villages, who were running away of the Castilian army. It was also crosses by the Napoleonic army during the "Guerra del Francès". Finally, we have to talk about the events that took place during the Constitutional Period, in 1822. The tendency of the village was certainly absolutist, and Bonastre was attacked by a punishment expedition composed by soldiers from Tarragona, Reus, Valls, Torredembarra and Altafulla. It was commanded by Josep Gayà, who came from Reus. The inhabitants run away from the village and far from the liberal troops. During the retreat, there were many dead and injured people. One of them was the Commandant Gayà, who was dead because of his wounds. It is known that Pau Casals lived in Bonastre in 1907, given the fact that his parents had bought a house in it. This house belonged to the Casals family until recently. The love for the village that Casals felt is reflected in the memories of the village in his conversations. |

The Casa del Delme, where the tithes of the Monastery of Sant Cugat and the first fruits for the Church used to be collected, is the oldest house in the village. Nowadays it belongs to a private owner, and it was restored although it conserves its ancient architectonic characteristics. It is important to mention the existence of some mines of iron and silver within the township. It is also necessary to refer to the roman sites (one necropolis and one roman village), that seem that were placed on an old Iberian site, from which there have been found some ruins. |
